London Web Design is a continuously evolving phenomenon and as the year comes to a close, this is a good time to take a look at London web design techniques and ideas that made an impact in 2014.

 

1. Flat UI for devices gained such traction, that according to Google, London web design in 2015 will evolve from flat designs to material designs, which “is the metaphor. A material metaphor is the unifying theory of rationalized space and a system of motion. Our material is grounded in tactile reality, inspired by our study of paper and ink, yet open to imagination and magic.” Flat designs are clutter-free and allow web pages to load faster. The absence of gradients, shadows and reflections leads to enhanced visual clarity. And website owners have taken to the idea in a big way.

 

2. London web design became more mobile-sensitive. As more and more people took to the Internet via handheld devices, London web design techniques focused on responsive websites that would switch between desktop and mobile versions. Clicking websites lost ground to scrolling websites that are now more common because of their intuitive adaptability for mobile screens. Scrolling is one of ways that brands are now endeavoring to ensure an immersive and personalized experience for users.

 

3. Card-based design is here to stay. One of the most exciting things in the continuous rearchitecturing of London web design is the increased use of cards to present information on a page. Google has taken to it and Android devices use cards that allow device owners to browse information in a personalized manner, you can choose the cards that you want displayed. Cards, also known as tiles and modules, use London web design to present snippets of information that allow us to decide whether we wish to see more.

 

4. Increase in the use of images and videos was a conspicuous feature of London web design trends in 2014. Driven in part by the proliferation of social media and the success of sites such as Twitter, Vine, Instagram, and Snapchat; and also by the fact that images and videos work better at attracting and retaining reader attention, this London web design trend has implications for mobile web design. Mobile websites that were less text-heavy were able to gain the desired action from visitors by focusing their attention on a prominent call to action.

 

5. The year also saw the London web design owners being offered impressive choices in fonts. You’re no longer limited to the same old Helvetica, Arial, or Times New Roman. The option in fonts allows brands to pick a font that is not a commonly used one and can be identified with their brand. Fonts that are easy to read on the flat UI have gained traction. A new trend of creating a mix-n-match with fonts has come up; using more than one font can also help web pages load faster. Large font sizes, sometimes at the cost of aesthetic value, came to the fore. No doubt, this had to do with ensuring smooth reading on mobile devices.

 

6. Storytelling got more interesting in 2014, courtesy London web design techniques such as parallax scrolling that allow for a 3-D effect. CSS3 is now seen more often for creating image captions on London web design sites. Videos evolved from being an aside to text into becoming the central attraction of a London web design page. More and more single page websites took to videos for making a sales pitch and directing users to a call to action. Single page designs were one of the flavors of the year also because of the coming of age of mobile sites. Scrolling down a single page on a mobile is easier than clicking on links and hoping that you don’t fall prey to the fat finger syndrome. And of course, infographics. So many sites carved out success stories and gained traffic to their money pages by posting useful infographics on the sites and then propagating the same through social media.

 

7. Keeping in tune with the minimalist and clean approach that dominated London web design ideas in 2015, most websites eschewed multiple colors and choose a clean color palette, it goes intuitively with the flat user interface idea discussed above. A fixed navigation menu and the near elimination of flash as a web design tool indicated a movement towards simplicity and easy use, which sometimes is not possible when a web page is loaded with unnecessary bells and whistles such as a fancy navigation.

 

8. Hero images came into their own this year. Many London web design sites, particularly small boutique sites made good use of hero images to create arresting intros on the home page. Hero images in 2014 were what sliders were on London web design properties in the preceding years. Doubtless, they are attention grabbers and allow you to come up with as spartan or elaborate a design as you want to.

 

9. The sidebar, once a must-have on websites, especially WordPress blogs, lost a fair bit of its sheen in 2014. London web designers that opted for cleaner-looking sites chose to do away with sidebars. And it was not a bad thing. White space is always welcome. The site appears a little less cluttered and visitors are not distracted by ads and graphics. Essentially, you have more space to place your content on the site.

 

10. And finally, this is something that I found particularly interesting – search bars that expand. It’s a cool London web design idea that saves real estate, especially at the top of the site, and yet allows you to enter a very long search string once the bar expands. A great development for responsive websites that need to perform on mobile devices.

 

These were the top London web design trends of 2014, there were others too, like the ghost button which sits there unobtrusively waiting for a click. Many of these trends will continue into the New Year and evolve.
